Pendleton x Kitsbow Icon Shirt for 2016

The Icon Shirt

A man in a plaid shirt stands in the forest

We’re proud to show off our newest collaboration with Kitsbow: the Icon shirt for 2016. This shirt is a marriage of wool, Nature’s first technical fabric, with Schoeller 3X Dry panels.

Icon shirt features

  • articulated sleeves and cuffs to create an adapted fit ready for riding
  • Classic menswear styling
  • Perforated stretch gussets at shoulders for increased mobility and ventilation both on and off the bike
  • Laser cut 3X Dry Schoeller panels strategically placed over shoulders and elbows for abrasion resistance
  • Pendleton Wool woven in Washougal, Washington
  • Leather label with hand-branded logo

This shirt happens to be Men’s Journal’s pick for best cycling shirt.

Here’s what they’re saying about it:
“This Pendleton wool flannel shirt has been in Kitsbow’s lineup for a few years now and during testing it’s proven rugged both while commuting and as an excellent piece for hiking and even as an apres-ski shirt. The USA-woven wool is naturally wind- and water-resistant, and a lot warmer than cotton flannel. Kitsbow adds venting and articulation at the backs of the shoulders, as well as subtle patching at the shoulders and elbows, the better to protect against abrasion if you decide to ride singletrack in the Icon. For us the best application though has been as an everyday piece that flows seamlessly between commuting, coffee shop runs, and weekends chopping wood to build a bonfire.”

Just a note, here. Kitsbow chooses the fabrics for these shirts.  It never fails that when presented with the full array of our Umatilla wool plaids, they choose the very best of the classic Pendleton plaids. So go see the full selection at Kitsbow.com .

Lindsey Thornburg and Pendleton team up again for artistic, beautiful capes.

Cape with toggle closures in a warm geometric pattern.

Lindsey Thornburg has done it again.

Our favorite New York-based, western USA-raised designer has once again taken beautiful Pendleton blankets and transformed them as only she can. With careful attention to the play of each blanket’s patterns, she’s created magic. We’ve linked to the blanket used in each cape so you can see them flat, and truly appreciate what she does. The cape above is made from a Spirit Guide blanket.

Taking a Blanket Home: Grand Canyon National Park and the #pendle10park Explorers

The Grand Canyon Blanket Goes Home

We sent our Grand Canyon blanket home to Grand Canyon National Park with photographer Kristian Irey, celebrating 100 years of our National Park Service.

Irey_Pendleton_33

Kristin’s thoughtful shots at the rim of this natural marvel are some of our favorites. And the Grand Canyon is one of the recipients of our fundraising efforts. All year, through sales of our own and collaborative National Park projects, we have been raising money to help restore the Grand Canyon’s train depot.

The Front Door

The Grand Canyon Depot in Grand Canyon Village is the Park’s “front door,” used as a meeting place for adventurers for over 100 years. This National Historic Landmark is the Park’s most-photographed man-made structure.  Pendleton’s contributions will help improve accessibility and preserve the character of this National Historic Landmark.

According to the National Park Service, “Nearly 230,000 visitors per year arrive at the Depot via the Grand Canyon Railway, which is an important component of the park’s transportation system. Currently the Grand Canyon Railway, owned and operated by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, runs up to two trains per day to the park from Williams, Arizona – saving approximately 300 daily vehicle trips during the peak visitor season.” That is approximately 50,000 cars, trucks and campers that will not add wear, tear and crowding to roads leading in and out of the park, thanks to the train.

Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter

Before the railroad opened in 1901, tourists had to fork over $15.00 for a three-day stagecoach ride to see the Grand Canyon. Upon arrival, they were accommodated in tent camps, a situation that didn’t change until the Santa Fe Railroad hired architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter to design six iconic buildings for the park, mostly on the South Rim.

  • Hopi House, 1905
  • Hermit’s Rest, 1914
  • Lookout Studio, 1914
  • Phantom Ranch, 1922
  • The Watchtower at Desert View, 1932
  • Bright Angel Lodge, 1935

Her work still stands today, having become an integral part of this vast, commanding landscape. You can learn more here: Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter

Curtis Kulig and Pendleton: The “Love Me” Herman Blanket

The Artist

Ed. note: in honor of Valentine’s Day, we bring you a repost on our “Love me” blanket with Curtis Kulig. Enjoy!

Curtis Kulig has left his signature mark all over the world. He’s achieved star status in the art scene, yet remains “SoHo’s most unexpected nice guy,” according to the New York Times. What else could you expect from a Midwesterner who has made his way in New York City based on one ubiquitous phrase:

love me

loveme_curtis_kulig.jpg

The Blanket

We are pleased to offer Curtis Kulig’s collaborative blanket with Pendleton Woolen Mills. Kulig brings his two-word manifesto to life in black and cream. Titled ‘Hermann,’ the design takes its inspiration from famed psychologist Hermann Rorschach to offer what Kulig calls “a bit of Love therapy.”

The title is spot-on, as Kulig’s art relies on the response of the beholder. “love me” might be two simple words, but the response is always complicated. Is it a request, a demand, a plea? Is it made in the spirit of humility, desperation or celebration?

Rorschach, indeed.

CurtisKulig_LoveMe_blanket

Said Kulig, “My dear friend Lindsey Thornburg asked me if I’d like to work with Pendleton and that’s what started the conversation. They are an amazing brand, truly American, and the craftsmanship that goes into every piece is incredible. I’m really honored to design a one of a kind blanket for them.”

Signature Touches

The Curtis Kulig “Love Me” Hermann Blanket is produced in Pendleton’s original mill in Pendleton, Oregon. A patch and certificate authenticate the blanket as part of a very limited series. It’s tied with ribbon that bears Curtis Kulig’s signature mark:
